How to start decluttering when you feel overwhelmed

When everything needs doing, nothing gets started. The fix usually isn't more motivation. It's a smaller first step.

1. Plan the next 15 minutes, not the whole room

"Declutter the house" is a project. "Clear the top of the dresser" is a task. Pick one task you could finish today, and write it on a sticky note. The note matters: it means you don't have to decide again when you sit down.

2. Choose a zone that is small, visible and easy

A good first zone has three things:

Save the emotional piles for later. A first win matters more than a hard one.

3. Take a "before" photo

A photo shows the room as it is, without the weight of how you feel about it. It also lets you split the room into zones without standing in the middle of it, and in a few weeks it gives you something to compare with.

4. Set a timer, and give yourself permission to stop

Fifteen minutes is short enough to start even on a low-energy day. When the timer ends, you may stop, even in the middle of the zone. If you're on a roll, keep going. If not, you still did something, and tomorrow is another zone.

5. Start with the easy wins

Go through the zone once and pick out only the obvious items: wrappers, expired things, broken things, empty boxes. Put them in a bag. Then move to the items that need a decision. Seeing the zone shrink early makes the rest easier.

6. Use one concrete question for the rest

For anything you can't decide on, skip "should I keep this?" and ask something you can answer, like "when did I last use this?" There are more in 15 questions to ask about any item.

7. When you stall

If the clutter is tied to a hard time in your life, such as a loss, an illness or a move, asking a friend to sit with you, or hiring a professional organizer, is a sensible choice and not a failure.

8. Tomorrow: one more zone

One small zone a day, repeated, beats a weekend marathon that you don't finish. The room changes more slowly than you'd like for a week, and then it starts to look different.
