Declutter before guests arrive: a 2-hour plan

You don't need a perfect house, just the parts guests will see. This is a staging plan for a short deadline. It is not a full declutter, and that comes later.

The idea

Think about the route a guest takes: the entrance, the living area, the bathroom, the kitchen, and the place they will sleep or sit. Those are the rooms that matter. Bedrooms you won't open can wait.

The plan

TimeZoneWhat to do
0:00 to 0:15EntryClear the floor and the shelf by the door. Make room for coats and bags.
0:15 to 0:35Living roomClear the surfaces. Put stray items in one basket to sort later.
0:35 to 0:55BathroomClear the counter, wipe it, put out a clean towel, and hide personal items.
0:55 to 1:25KitchenEmpty the sink, clear the counters, take out the trash.
1:25 to 1:45Guest spaceClear a spot for a bag, and make the bed or the couch.
1:45 to 2:00Final passTake bags out, check the entry, and open a window.

Rules for a short deadline

After the visit

Empty the contain-it box within a week. Put a date on it, or it becomes a permanent pile. Then do the real work, one small zone at a time. See how to start decluttering when you feel overwhelmed.
